Today’s Groupon will help you find the inner mountain-goat hiding inside your secret inner Batcave: for $40, you’ll get an introductory climbing training class and one month of unlimited climbing at Boston Rock Gym (an $80.50 combined value). This is a great opportunity for beginning ascenders to learn the ropes and slopes of rock climbing. Participants must be at least 12 years old to participate in the class (though there are youth programs not covered by this Groupon), and there is no upper age limit. You’re never too old to defiantly defy the tyranny of gravity.

The introductory class will teach you the skills you need to scale up, down, and side to side on the manmade peaks within the facilities. The indoor climbing environment makes a pleasant, safe learning space, free of "mythological" thunderbirds and obnoxious yellow Hummer H3s. You’ll learn about essential climbing gear and techniques during the three-hour course, and your teacher will be one of several certified mountaineers with multiple years of experience under their harnesses. The class includes rental of climbing shoes, harness, belay device, and chalk bag. Once you’ve completed the course and can successfully pass the belay test, you’ll be cleared to conquer. Classes are offered on weekends from 9 a.m. to noon, and Monday, Friday, and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

There are several walls of varying difficulty inside Boston Rock Gym. With plenty of routes for novices, you won’t need to worry about a steep learning curve; once you get the hang of it, you’ll be reaching the summits with ease. Your one month of climbing entitles you to unlimited climbs within that period, giving you the chance to challenge yourself with more difficult routes and finally prove to your father that you aren’t a quitter. The one month does not cover gear rental, which is $7 per visit for the complete equipment package. Even if you’re not ready to move on to the next level, the grip placements are frequently moved, baffling climbing spies and ensuring that you’ll never take the same route twice. The gym is open seven days a week and is conveniently located just off I-95 and 93.

Note: All participants need to sign a waiver prior to climbing, and a legal guardian must sign for climbers under 18.

5000 Feet: Breathing becomes labored; earthly memories fade.
10,000 Feet: Why does it smell like Christmas?
20,000 Feet: Weight of the treasured Elf Stones lifted only by inspiring visions of the Gates of Shamagor.

About Boston Rock Gym

Certified by the American Mountain Guides Association, the staff of climbing instructors at Boston Rock Gym teach torsos how to ascend altitudes with indoor-, outdoor-, and youth-climbing activities. The savvy instructors lead the way around the facility’s more than 40 ropes, which set the stage for both group and private indoor lessons, as well as open climbing sessions in which self-guided climbers reach for neon-colored handgrips while being supported by auto-belay devices. Outdoors, students learn to navigate nature’s authentic slabs during lessons and clinics that start with the basics and graduate up to advanced ice-climb maneuvers. Additionally, the facility’s youth programs cater to smaller grips and aim to boost self-confidence while preparing children for the physical-fitness portion of the SAT.
