A Chat with Cedar Creek Kung Fu
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Cedar Creek Kung Fu is brand new and custom built! Additionally, we offer both ranking and non-ranking programs for adults, and our kids’ program is definitely not a belt factory. Everyone here works hard, has fun, learns a lot, and earns their rank. You won’t find any 10 year old “black belts” running around here.
What is one of your most popular offerings?
Aside from our Kids’ Kung Fu class, one of our most popular programs is our strength training class with kettlebells. Both men and women love it, but it’s especially popular with women. In our kettlebell class everyone gets fit at their own pace and the classes are never the same. We have so much equipment and such a variety of exercises that the possibilities for routines are endless. Another thing people seem to like about it is that the class is only half an hour - and that includes warm up, core exercises, and stretch/cool down. It’s an extremely efficient way to get in shape without getting “bored at the gym.”
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
I’ve been involved in martial arts since 1973 and have trained with and taken seminars from some really great folks - Royce Gracie, Relson Gracie, Ed Parker, Dan Inosanto, Chao Chi Liu, Brian Duffy, Master Odie - those are just a few. When I set up my school, I wanted to have a core curriculum that included the best I had learned from many sources (that’s part of the fun when you own your own school). Now that I’m here in Cedar Creek, Texas, I’m able to do it all - Tien Shan Pai Kung Fu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, ground submissions, kettlebells, sandbags, battle ropes, traditional weapons, tai chi, bodyweight and core fitness. It’s all here under one roof, and that was my goal when I first opened in 1989.
What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about teaching is getting to know my students and hearing how what they’ve learned has helped them. Here’s a letter I received in 2005: “I have been a Tai Chi student with you for over 5 years and have received many benefits from my training. My overall health has improved over the last few years, especially during the past year due to my participation in the kettlebell program. Tai Chi has helped me learn to control my temperament in stressful work situations, and I have a better ability to relax at home.”Running my own school has also given me the chance to get involved with the community. Here’s an excerpt from a letter I received in 2001: “The more than $2,000.00 dollars your school raised will go a long way to ensure that our Washington-to-Washington bike ride for autism will be a huge success. The kindness, generosity and martial art spirit you have shown in supporting this cause are a credit to you and to the high ideals that you instill in your students.”
