Students at Central California Fencing lunge, parry, and appel under the trained eye of 20-year veteran and three-time U.S. National Champion Clinton Kershaw. The studio provides foils to swashbucklers-in-training and hides street clothes under complementary protective fencing gear, including masks, jackets, plumed hats, and gloves. Lessons cover a wide swath of sword-swinging fundamentals, imparting rules and terminology early on to help fledgling fencers acclimate to the sport. Footwork training and a focus on the foil's particular strengths keep pupils balanced and moving, and practice duels near lesson's end provide an opportunity to practice new skills such as thrusting and lightly slapping a rival with a glove. Classes run Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
