Courses offered with this deal are Kayak 101 ($79) and Rescue & Safety ($89). Both courses are scheduled back-to-back from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., respectively, and are available every Wednesday and two Saturdays per month until October 27. All gear, including life vests and safety equipment, is provided.

Established in 2004, Desert Adventures offers audacious explorers and thrill seekers reliable guidance and quality kayaks for backcountry adventuring. Kayak 101 covers kayak nomenclature, proper stretching, dressing for immersion, potential hazards, and analyzing the weather. Paddling safety and equipment are covered in a classroom, while participants can hone their paddling technique, learn to maintain stability, and execute a wet exit on the water. The Rescue & Safety course delves deeper into safety practices by covering essential rescue techniques that can be performed with minimal equipment. Topics focus on potential danger avoidance, self-recovery, partner rescues, and assisting tired or weak paddlers. Students who complete the courses are eligible to rent high performance sea kayaks from Desert Adventures and skim across watery planes with hair-drying rapidity. Additionally, students can rest easy knowing that Desert Adventures' guides are CPR and First Aid-certified. Call ahead to schedule your trip, as spaces are limited.

Participants must be at least 14 years old and weigh under 250 pounds.

Desert Adventures

After noticing a lack of guided outdoor-excursion opportunities, James Dingess founded Desert Adventures in 2004 to help locals and visitors to take advantage of Nevada’s stunning natural landscapes. What began as a small paddling outfit with a handful of kayaks and a single employee has since expanded to include ATV, mountain biking, and time-travel adventures led by knowledgeable guides. Desert Adventures stays true to its kayaking roots with a fleet of 125 shells and half- to four-day Colorado River runs. Guides also lead multiday, multisport excursions combining various activities, as well as high-speed ziplining tours that careen from the top of Red Mountain to the base of Bootleg Canyon. Most adventures accommodate all skill levels, but some carry experience or age restrictions.

This was a memorable bike tour. They took into account the desert heat and thus started the tour early in the morning. There was even time for a beautiful hike. Plus lunch was included, which was fresh and tasty.

The guides we had on our hike were friendly and knowledgeable. Gary and Brian are awesome thanks for the memories!

We had a very memorable experience on our hot springs hike. They supply a large deli lunch plus water and a backpack. So all you need is to wear your swimsuit under your clothes and wear comfy shoes that will get wet walking through creeks and the hot springs. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and taught us about the desert plants, terrain and many safety hiking tips. The hot springs were located walking through a very pretty slot canyon and really nice to soak in after a couple hour hike. Below the springs you get to a beach on the Colorado river where you enjoy a nice relaxing lunch. The water is cooler but we enjoyed a quick little dip in the river. Thoroughly enjoyed our adventure and are planning on booking through desert adventures again and will try their kayak trip next time. Thanks again Gerald for the exciting day! ;) B&N
