Filmmaker Jean Luc-Godard once said, "The cinema is truth at 24 frames per second," making slow-mo sports replays and sped-up Benny Hill gags nothing but cruel, cruel lies. Get the real deal with today's Groupon: for $10, you get two tickets to any film in the Forever Young Family & Children's Series presented by Film Streams (up to an $18 value). These family-friendly flicks are screening until September 30 at the Ruth Sokolof Theater downtown.
The series' lineup includes films kids may have missed during their first childhood, as well as classics that deserve a second run on the big screen. See the first recorded instance of a flying bicycle in Steven Spielberg's classic story of missing a ride home, E.T.: Extra-Terrestrial (August 7–19), or celebrate the 25th anniversary of Marty McFly's time travel or commemorate the 55th anniversary of his electric-guitar solo with Back to the Future (September 18–30). Other cinematic gems include The Thief of Baghdad and Whale Rider. Each film has a two-week run with afternoon showtimes on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Film Streams is a nonprofit organization that opened the Ruth Sokolof Theater in 2007 in order to present films to the community. The new, stylish theater honors the passionate and inspirational Omaha educator Ruth Sokolof, whose legacy includes a preschool for visually impaired students in addition to the theater bearing her name. While visiting the house of Ruth, snack on traditional concessions as well as non-traditional selections such as Blue Line Coffee and healthier movie munchies.
- Both the movie house and its extensive offerings are the sort of resources one expects to stumble upon happily in second-city American metropolises — Seattle, Dallas, Philadelphia, even Washington or Chicago. – Eric Konisgsberg, New York Times
- Seats were comfy, snacks were tasty and the staff was friendly. – rene d., Yelp
