The Scouting Report
On March 23, historic Boardwalk Hall will host a high-octane hockey game between the Albany Devils and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, both of whom will be playing with postseason implications on the line. Both squads sit in second place in their respective divisions, and the Devils need to continue their winning ways to protect their place in the Eastern Conference’s playoff picture.
As spectators enjoy each slapshot and board-quaking check, they can also peek over to the Pucks and Paws seating section. In their corner of the arena, canines celebrate a one-night-only, bring-your-dog-to-the-game promotion as their human caretakers keep them from chasing after hockey sticks.
Under a 137-foot-high, barrel-vault ceiling, Boardwalk Hall’s floor has played host to historic Garden State moments for more than eight decades. The longest clear-span space in the world when it opened in 1929, the venue has seen the nation’s first indoor football game, the first indoor helicopter flight, and performances by such luminaries as the Beatles, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong. A $90 million renovation completed in 2001 ushered the space into the new millennium, updating the lighting, improving the acoustics, and roping off a section of seats for time-traveling audience members.
