Hip Hop Smackdown

• Lil’ Kim: This genre-maker pioneered female-fronted rap and cemented herself as a lasting presence in hip-hop with her 1996 solo debut, Hard Core. Three charting albums later and the monarch of empowered eroticism still reigns while spitting such classics as “Crush on You” and “No Time.”
• Fat Joe: Since the ’90s, hip-hop veteran Fat Joe has been decorating the walls of his house with gold and platinum plaques for songs including “What’s Luv (Featuring Ashanti)?” and “Make It Rain (Featuring Lil Wayne).” More recently, he teamed up with rapper Remy Ma for a collaboration album that birthed the monster hit “All the Way Up.”
• Naughty by Nature: If you’re “down with O.P.P.,” then you know this Grammy-winning trio. The ’90s icons also coined the ubiquitous call-and-response chant “hey! ho!” in their singalong hit, “Hip Hop Hooray.”
• Too Short: As a pioneer of West Coast hip-hop, Too Short influenced the next generation of rappers with hits such as “The Ghetto” and “Blow the Whistle.”
• Lil’ Boosie: After dropping “Give Me That” and “Wipe Me Down,” this Baton Rouge native did a stint at Louisiana State Penitentiary, only to re-emerge as Boosie Badazz, collaborate on the hit “Show Da World,” and debut Touch Down 2 Cause Hell at #3 on the Billboard charts.
