• Lil’ Kim: This genre-maker pioneered female-fronted rap and cemented herself as a lasting presence in hip-hop with her 1996 solo debut, Hard Core. Three charting albums later and the monarch of empowered eroticism still reigns while spitting such classics as “Crush on You” and “No Time.”
• Fat Joe: Since the ’90s, hip-hop veteran Fat Joe has been decorating the walls of his house with gold and platinum plaques for songs including “What’s Luv (Featuring Ashanti)?” and “Make It Rain (Featuring Lil Wayne).” More recently, he teamed up with rapper Remy Ma for a collaboration album that birthed the monster hit “All the Way Up.”
• Ja Rule: With brass-knuckle rhymes delivered in a voice that smolders like a hot cigar, Ja Rule first came to prominence thanks to a tour with Jay-Z and DMX. He cemented that prominence with the hit “Holla Holla” and high-profile collaborations with Jennifer Lopez (“Ain’t It Funny”), Christina Milian (“Between You and Me”), and Ashanti (“Always on Time”).
• State Property: after the film of the same name dropped in 2002 on Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella Films, its corresponding soundtrack marked the beginning of the collective’s career, including Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Young Chris and Neef Buck, and Omillio Sparks.
• 112: They’re the Georgia R&B quartet known for their Grammy–winning background vocals on P. Diddy’s “I’ll Be Missing You,” as well as the hits “Only You,” “Anywhere,” and “Peaches & Cream.”
