In a development that forever altered human history, man domesticated horses and mastered the ability to ride them following the tragic Polar Bear Derby of 1957. Hone your skills at the ultimate in animal transport with today’s Groupon: for $59, you get three 30-minute private horseback-riding lessons at Great Escapes Stables in South Lyon (a $120 value).
Founded by 20-year veteran Robyn Schamante, Great Escapes is committed to developing horsemanship, sportsmanship, and riding technique in youths of any skill level. Cavalry-club aspirants younger than 6 years of age score hands-on pony experience during young-rider lessons, in which they'll learn the fundamentals of leading, grooming, painting their hooves during slumber parties, and other unmounted horse-handling activities.
Older beginners, meanwhile, practice stopping, steering, and trotting atop one of the stable’s silky, lesson-approved equines with a walk-trot session. Once they've worked up to walk-trot-canter lessons, they'll become independent in handling and will be able to form their steeds into rudimentary a cappella ensembles.
Expert-level gauchos can prep for competitions with cross-pole and jumping classes, which requires participants to canter in two-point position without stirrups and defeat their horses at arm wrestling.
All lessons take place amid Great Escapes Stables’ sprawling acreage of grassy hills and well-kept training arenas. Robyn also tracks each new rider's progress with wall charts and an interactive website displaying student-specific information, as well as tweets from all the horses featured on the site.

About Great Escape Stables
Extensively trained in the Hunter/Jumper riding tradition, Great Escape Stables owner Robyn Schamante harnesses her equestrian knowledge to guide students of all ages toward expert horsemanship and riding skills. During private and group lessons, Schamante and her amiable staff instill in their students the values of traditional horsemanship, such as kindness and respect for the stable’s docile mounts or gentleness when french-braiding a horse’s tail. Schamante also hosts special events, such as horse shows, throughout the year and day camps during the summer.
