About Houston Sword Sports
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
We offer classes for beginning, intermediate and advanced fencers. We also offer sword-related classes like stage combat, and fencing enrichment classes for schools. We are the only club in the greater Houston area to offer all three Olympic fencing weapons – epee, foil and saber. We have the largest adult fencing program in Houston, and our classes for kids are a lot of fun – kids learn through play, so we teach fencing through games.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
We started Houston Sword Sports in 2015 because we saw an opportunity to expand fencing beyond the limited markets that other clubs are reaching. We all play with swords when we’re kids. The great thing about fencing is that you can keep playing with swords! Our goal is to show all the people of Houston that fencing is an option for them.
What do you love most about your job?
As coaches, we help our students learn the sport. The most rewarding part of coaching is being part of a student’s personal growth and seeing them develop.
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
We love seeing the happy surprise from parents when the kids who would usually rather play video games are begging to come back to fencing every week. The kids leave class happy and tired, and the parents can hardly believe how much energy the kids used in practice!
