Named after a Zen term that means “initial awakening,” Kensho Martial Arts rouses sleepy fitness routines for beginners and advanced students alike with fighting techniques from around the world. Head instructor Roger Luri brings a seventh-degree black belt and 30 years of experience to each of his classes, which range from kickboxing to yoga. Luri employs a safe, structured, and fun environment to share the techniques that fighters and martial artists use to get in top shape. In addition to cultivating discipline, mixed-martial-arts classes for adults and kids impart enough self-defense strategies to defeat an octopus wielding four sets of nunchucks. Designed to melt calories, bolster core strength, and sculpt the arms and legs, kickboxing workouts draw from traditions as diverse as K-1, French savate, and Thai boxing. More than two dozen classes fill the weekly schedule, helping participants squeeze exercise into crowded calendars. Students also score a martial-arts uniform, which, unlike a fanny pack filled with helium, minimizes clothing-related distractions.
