Bermuda-grass fairways snake through 7,358 yards of well-preserved woodlands & dramatic elevation changes

A golf course is a scenic sanctuary where young blades of grass receive constant grooming and grizzled grains of sand can retire far away from merciless ocean waves. Explore a relaxing landscape with today's Groupon to Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Choose between the following options:

  • For $24, you get 18 holes of golf with cart rental anytime Monday–Thursday (up to a $49 value).
  • For $37, you get 18 holes of golf with cart rental anytime Friday–Sunday (up to a $75 value).

Featured in Golfweek's 2010 lists of Best New Courses and Best Campus Courses, the par 71 Lonnie Poole Golf Course takes duffers through 7,358 yards of dramatic elevation changes and towering tree lines. The Arnold Palmer–designed course makes the most of the area's natural topography, snaking around vast buffer areas that protect indigenous wildlife from golfer incursion and keep wayward orbs from straying into remote streams, wetlands, and the covetous teeth of ball-hungry reptiles, providing a more eco-friendly layout. A coterie of diversely shaped bunkers eschews unnatural geometrical forms that characterize traps on many courses. Bermuda grass carpets the sprawling fairways, rewarding good shots with a short-grass respite from the blended thickets of fescue and ryegrass peppered throughout the rough, in which particularly bad lies will make for tougher outs than many course hazards.

The relatively difficult course challenges golfers early with the immensely long par 4 third, where long drives manage to cut the precarious corner of the uphill, bunker-fortified dogleg left, but still leave significant work on the second shot—a forced carry over a native hazard, deep sand bunker, and mystical beanstalks into a slick, bent-grass green.

In addition to attracting public players, Lonnie Poole Golf Course nurtures the swinging prowess of the North Carolina State University men's and women's golf teams and hosts scores of PGA-sanctioned events. The course is Audubon-certified for its eco-savvy design, has become a place to be photographed by local sports camerapeople, and was used during the filming of all the moon scenes in Apollo 13.

About Lonnie Poole Golf Course

Named among Golfweek magazine's Best New Courses and Best Campus Courses in 2010, Lonnie Poole Golf Course tests players of all skill levels with 18 challenging holes spread over 250 acres of Raleigh woodlands. Designed by the Arnold Palmer Design Group—including two North Carolina State grads as architects—the landscape features several shifts in elevation as the greens meander around large buffer areas. In its abundant turf grass and stormwater runoffs, the course also facilitates research from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences while taking extra care to preserve the streams and wild golf balls native to the Neuse River watershed.

As both the NC State men's and women's golf teams can attest, Lonnie Poole challengers golfers from the very first tee, which taunts drivers with bunkers on both sides and a sharp fall-off past the green. From there, the fifth hole ups the ante with a dogleg to the right and tall trees, whereas the 12th hole sends shots hurtling down a downhill fairway that narrows as the green nears and primes its anti-air missiles.
