Slick mud splattered across Oahu's countryside & 10 obstacles challenge sprinters during 5k mud run before post-run concert & beer
Early humans developed the ability to sprint in order to chase down sprightly prey and invented long-distance running to escape from slowly approaching glaciers. Follow in their fossilized footsteps with today's Groupon: for $27, you get one entry into the Makahiki Challenge 2012, a 5k obstacle mud run at Kualoa Ranch in Kaneohe on March 10 at 10:15 a.m., heat #2 (a $55 value). A $5 parking fee at Kualoa Ranch is not included. Each contestant receives:
- Entry to the 5k mud run
- Makahiki challenge T-shirt
- Makahiki headband
- Entrance to the Pa'ina and concert One pia (beer) for contestants 21 and older
Inspired by an ancient Hawaiian sports and religious festival, Makahiki Challenge 2012 tests runners with a five-kilometer mud run outfitted with 10 obstacles. Earth-covered contestants race through the Oahu countryside while scaling a cargo net, sliding down the side of a mud-slicked hill, balancing on beams over a cow pit, and spelling the word "onomatopoeia" backwards. Patrons are encouraged to sport a costume (prize awarded for most native costume), and all participants should wear outfits that can get muddy. After the sludgy sprint, competitors can meet their opponents at the Pa'ina where tunes from musical guests Kimie and Kaipo Kapua and sips from pia (beer) help bring rivals together to form friendships and human pyramids.
