Meet meatless merrymaking with today's Groupon: $35 worth of vegetarian and vegan Indian cuisine for $15 at Nalapak Indian Restaurant in Columbia Heights. Nalapak used to be Udupi, the consistently delicious chutney and curry favorite. It reopened in 2006 under new management, and Mpls.St.Paul Magazine says Nalapak's authentic Indian fare is on par with Udupi's, that is, "as good as these traditional [foods] get."
The carefully crafted dishes on Nalapak's menu combine exotic Indian spices with fresh vegetables to create healthy and delicious North and South Indian cuisine. Lunch is an extensive buffet; Mpls.St.Paul Magazine recommends trying mysterious foods and dunking the medhu vada, which are small lentil doughnuts, in one of the five or six tantalizing chutneys and sauces. Dinner is a la carte. Try Nalapak's paneer dishes (made with homemade farmer’s cheese) such as mutter paneer ($15) or palak paneer made with creamed spinach ($13).
Nalapak is a stylish and comfortable restaurant. Their staff is friendly and the chefs are handpicked for their Indian expertise. If your New Years Resolution was to try something new and you've already learned to tie new knots with your feet, completed a Sudoku puzzle, and sold something that wasn't yours on eBay, this is the perfect chance to treat your taste buds to Indian food. Stick to your resolution.
Mpls.St.Paul Magazine reviewed NalaPak:
- ...when Udupi reopened as NalaPak, under new ownership, I was cautiously optimistic. But my old friend has returned in full force, serving the most fully flavored and varied menu of regional Indian vegetarian and vegan cuisine in the Twin Cities. – Andrew Zimmern, Mpls.St.Paul Magazine
- The Best South Indian food i ever had. And a great service. – Ritika, HappyCow
- Nalapak is the best Indian food in the Twin Cities. I love their Sambar especially. – an OpenTable.com user who dined on 10/02/2009
- I was a little hesitant about eating here, because of the mixed reviews... especially since the change of ownership. But WOW!! This is definitely, by far, the best Indian restaurant I've ever eaten at! – supertrouper, HappyCow
