Among the many enjoyable things to do with boulders, climbing ranks third behind putting giant hats on them and rolling them down mountains toward villages of smurfs. Scale some rocks with today's Groupon: for $49, you get a belay certification class (up to a $40 value) and one-month membership (a $67.41 value with tax) to New Jersey Rock Gym in Fairfield (up to a $107.41 value).

New Jersey Rock Gym boasts more than 12,000 square feet of climbing terrain where climbers can scale heights, dangle from back-bended walls, and puzzle out holds on a 4,000-square-foot bouldering island. 41 top-rope stations provide ample anchorage, and a bouldering tunnel with follow-along ramp allows climbers to clamber sans rope, relying only on their hands, feet, and powerful extrudable tongues. During belaying classes instructors rely on a 4:1 instructor-student ratio to work closely with inexperienced climbers and prepare them to provide ground support and tie knots. Students graduate with the skills to pass New Jersey Rock Gym's top-rope certification test and the ability to clamber up streetlights to get away from stampedes of pedestrians.

For the first week, wall-clingers are outfitted with complimentary equipment; after that, standard rental rates apply for shoes ($5), chalk bags ($2), harnesses ($9), or combined packages ($9). A climber's lounge with WiFi is open to all, and a private refreshment room is available for parties. Climbers can combine the free week of admission and gear that's included with the belay-certification class with the one month of membership included in this Groupon.

Classes are held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to noon or 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

About New Jersey Rock Gym

Home to the state's largest freestanding bouldering island, New Jersey Rock Gym houses 12,000 square feet of vertical terrain to climb as well as 41 top roping stations. Armed with either day passes or membership, guests scamper up the gym's synthetic summits, hoping to ask questions of the learned ceiling light sequestered at the top of the mountain. While gear is included with some membership options, guests can opt to bring their own materials or rent the individual shoes ($5), harnesses ($4), or chalk bags ($2) they need from the pro shop. New Jersey Rock Gym offers a collection of educational course work in the vertical arts, teaching belay technique to beginners or advanced skills. Children can also take advantage of youth climbing programs, mini camps, and birthday parties before retiring to private refreshment chambers to absorb bottles of electrolyte-infused refreshment. The nearby pro shop outfits climbers with name-brand gear for purchase, while a WiFi lounge transmits terabytes of data into nearby electronic devices or unsecured cyborg brains.
