Dance can express what words cannot, whether it's the triumphant joy in a football player's posttouchdown pirouette or the passionate tango used to notify roommates that the basement is flooding. Transmit tidings with twinkling toes with today’s Groupon: for $12, you get two tango lessons (a $12 value each) and a milonga party (a $15 value) for one person at Nora & Ed: Tango, held at the Congregation Etz Chaim in Palo Alto (a $39 total value).
Boasting more than 40 years of tango experience, Nora Olivera and her husband Edward Neale teach tangoers of all experience levels to synch feet and bodies to buoyant South American rhythms. Born and raised in Argentina, Olivera performs professionally around the world and teaches tango the way Argentines dance it, without swords or samurai garb. During two lessons, students learn to strut the tango's nuanced walks and hold partners in the dance's signature sultry embraces. In one session, dancers will study milonga, a spicy relative of the tango, tapping toes to 2/4 time and while mastering the rhythmic steps.
Tango classes are held every Thursday, and different sessions cater to varying experience levels and skills, so dancers should carefully avoid attending a session catered to well-coordinated squirrels. Tango classes for all levels are held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and intermediate tango classes run from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Otra milonga sessions are held on the third Saturday of every month, with a class running from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. After the milonga class, students are invited to strut their newly busted moves with their classmates until 1 a.m.
