Padre Island Surf Camp's elite team of wave-tamers proudly tout a Billabong-sponsored lesson dispensary for groups and solo surfers alike. During the youth-oriented surf camp (ages 5 to 17), ocean jaunts are preceded by dry land lessons regarding Surfline's 10-point beginners' guide, the Bill of Rights and Lefts, safety and ocean awareness, and turf-surfing cross-country boards. After a 45-minute introduction, students breach the brine on a short, long, paddle, or fish-shaped board, where they remain for guided instruction, free surf, or other beach activities until the end of the day. With a student-to-teacher ratio of 4:1, instructors sufficiently impart their waterlore and shark-wrestling techniques to every student.
A private lesson includes 90-minutes of one-on-one water skimming with an experienced, tubular instructor. Unlike the 25-person camp, these lessons do not have a set schedule and can be suited to your froth-based needs. Prepare for these classes like you would any day at the beach, packing a lunch (or $5 to buy one for campers), extra bathing suits, sandals, a towel, a water bottle, sunglasses, a T-shirt, and plenty of sand repellent. Transportation is not included but can be arranged for a $20 fee.

Founded by two graduates of Texas A&M’s Corpus Christi campus, Padre Island Surf Club caters to all levels of surfers, from first-timers to tube-riding competitors in the Texas Gulf Surfing Association. Instructors maintain a 4:1 student-to-teacher ratio during youth surf camps, tailoring their lessons to campers between the ages of 5 and 17. The team also organizes girls’ and women’s camps and after-school programs that reinforce basic math concepts by requiring students to count the sum total of each day’s high-fives.
When they aren’t building campers’ self-esteem through lessons that become more challenging with each new skill mastered, instructors turns kids loose to have fun with kayaks and standup paddleboards and even schedule trips to the Texas State Aquarium. Padre Island Surf Club’s educational efforts have earned them sponsorships from top industry companies such as Billabong, Kustom, and Surfline.
