Attracting the ringside cheers of both NBC’s Today show and CBS’s WBZ 4, The Ring Boxing Club, a 2011 CityVoter “Best Gym in Boston” winner, eschews the monotony of standard fitness routines for full-body workouts enlivened by punching bags and sparring matches. Led by boxers with actual fighting experience, the schedule of more than 60 weekly classes draws the sweat, calories, and a cappella renditions of “Eye of the Tiger” out of fledgling bruisers in the comfort of an air-conditioned gym festooned with boxing memorabilia and posters. The gym’s 12-round boxing workout combines a professional boxer’s regimen with a montage of fitness drills, while technique workouts run through the pugilist’s basic toolset, focusing on footwork, punches, and blocks. Other courses include strength training and a fundamentals clinic, in which students learn boxing theory and concentrate on form. More experienced fighters can also step into the ring to spar with other members, finally exhibiting skills culled from hours of training or an uncanny ability to turn opponents into friends using the Socratic method.
