Art can express a variety of human feelings, from joy at the birth of a child to confusion at the birth of a man-child. Eloquently articulate your emotions with today's Groupon: for $12 you get a hand-blown glass ornament (a $25 value) and 10% off glassblowing classes at Studio West, which is ranked #1 Thing to Do in Eugene according to TripAdvisor's popularity index.

Studio West's owners, a couple who met inside a molten bubble at renowned glass blower Dale Chihuly's studio, strive to nurture diversity and inject artistic expression into every aspect of their lives and into the community. Inside their studio, fine lighting and artistic arrangement bring hand-blown glass pieces' delicate structures and vibrant colors to life. Ornaments are semi-transparent and swirl with soft spots of blues, reds, or manifold colors that come together occasionally in a way that resembles the riders of the Pony Express delivering an urgent package to Abraham Lincoln. These exquisitely beautiful pieces superbly complement the verdant greens of Christmas trees but can catch light in a window and add glow to a room all year round.

Glass blowing classes at Studio West encourage beginners to create their own piece of art under the one-on-one instruction of a master glass blower. Creating a piece from start to finish can take only an hour or two, but the pride budding blowers take in their pieces lasts even longer than plastic bags in a landfill.

Studio West will be closed for the entire month of January.

  • It's fun to get to do some hands-on (or should I say, tools-on) exercises with the glass, but what I liked best was having one-on-one time with the glassblower himself. Conrad Williams is an excellent teacher and happy to answer any question you have about the process. – hedwall, TripAdvisor
  • We made our own ornament and bowl to take home and the memory makes me smile everytime [sic] I see them. – kpaton, TripAdvisor

About Studio West Glassblowing Studio and Gallery

Owned and operated by glass artists and collaborators Alejandro Hernandez and Ciara Cuddihy, Studio West houses a gallery of fine paintings and glasswork attached to a full glassblowing studio. The cream walls and bright lights of the gallery give way to the industrial metal and stony tile of the workshop, where artisans can be seen retrieving white-hot gobs of glass from the furnaces. These mounds of molten potential are regularly rolled and shaped into handmade trinkets and vases, which can be immediately smashed and melted, completing their life cycle. Visitors can experience the process for themselves during workshops, where they receive hands-on training from the glassworkers in how to bend the superheated silica to their will.
