An assemblage of great golf minds, entertainers, and players flock to Tampa Bay Downs’ golf-practice facility to regale clubbers during Golfest. Students of the game can listen intently as a 2012 North Florida PGA teacher of the year Matt Mitchell discusses the game’s finer points, or watch in awe as long-drive champion and trick-shot artist Mike Ziegler launches balls into the stratosphere or the beaks of unsuspecting pelicans. LPGA ace Brittany Lincicome will headline Saturday’s festivities, and Golf Channel’s Win McMurray will take over for Sunday’s festivities. During Golfest, visitors also can engage in the event’s surrounding activities, such as free lessons from PGA instructors, a million-dollar hole-in-one challenge, and a complimentary drawing to win two tickets to a practice round at golf’s first major of the year, taking place in Georgia.
Although not open to the public during Golfest, Tampa Bay Downs’ 22-acre golf-practice facility fosters swing-honing practice with 45 Bermuda-grass hitting stalls. Linksmen can smooth out their corkscrew motions in quick sessions with a pony bucket (40 balls; a $5.50 value) or punish undisciplined irons with a high-octane practice furnished by a thoroughbred bucket (120 balls; an $11.50 value). Buckets can be redeemed until the end of 2013, and the range is fully lit for late-night sessions.<p>
