Because plants are jealous of our ability to live indoors, they attempt to infiltrate our finest mansions and universities by slowly climbing stony facades. Visit a place built specifically to contain these floral strivers with today's Groupon: for $8, you get one adult admission (a $16.80 value including HST) at Victoria Butterfly Gardens in Brentwood Bay. This 12,000-square-foot indoor tropical rainforest, home to 3,000 butterflies and moths, tropical birds, and fish, showcases the life cycle and flight of tropical butterflies. With up to 75 different species—many of which are bred at the gardens, enjoying a blissful larvaehood in the butterfly nursery—visitors can observe the fluttering fauna in all their free-flying glory. The gardens are also home to more than 200 orchid species and thousands of tropical plants, including the carnivorous cousins of vegetarian vegetation. Try not to fall in the Koi-filled fish pond when Mango and Houdini, the resident Caribbean flamingos, mock visitors standing on two legs.
- Perfect place to entertain a toddler for an hour or two. There are many beautiful butterflies, but it goes much further with Pink Flamingos and Parrots. – Dave S., Yelp
- Inside, there are hundreds of butterflies, floating about or resting on the impressive collection of tropical plants. There are also a few birds in the garden, along with a koi-filled pond. It all looks very nice, and the climate is kept warm and extremely humid. – johnburtonbrown, TripAdvisor
The Butterfly Gardens
Perhaps unsurprisingly, butterflies play a starring role at Victoria Butterfly Gardens. Thousands of them flutter around freely, up to 75 species from across the globe. But the facility isn't just a home for butterflies: it's a thriving ecosystem. Exotic birds fill the space with their native songs, and other critters—including iguanas, tree frogs, and tortoises—also roam about the tropical plants and orchids.
In order to accommodate such a diverse spectrum of life, the thermostat at Victoria Butterfly Gardens remains set at 25 degrees Celsius with 80 percent humidity. The facility has essentially re-created a rainforest, and precise management enables it to thrive without packing the soil with such foreign sources as herbicides, pesticides, or protein powder. While strolling along its paths, visitors learn all about how the ecosystem operates, and various exhibits and displays let them inspect the Gardens' creatures and plant life more closely.
