While climbing the mostly destroyed Porcelain Tower of Nanjing shows much gallantry and imagination, consider the more attainable goal of becoming a better rock climber. With today’s Groupon, $30 gets you two introductory passes (each includes a rock-climbing day pass, rentals, and an hour-long session of personal instruction) or an eight-day punch pass at Thresh Hold Climbing and Fitness.
Located in Riverside just off I-215, Thresh Hold offers lessons for climbers of all levels and ages—given you are at least six years old. Should you decide to go with the two intro passes (a total value of $60), you’ll receive gear rentals before beginning the first hour-long personal session. A professional instructor will help you advance your climbing skills, whether it’s instruction in belaying; knot craft; learning the difference between top roping, leading and bouldering; or yelling words of climbing encouragement such as "Use your hands" or "I'm going to become your best friend." For the more advanced climber, instruction is offered in lead belay, clipping technique, and fall safety. And for the post-advanced climber: flying.
If you've got climbing experience under your climbing belt, opt for the eight-day punch pass (an $80 value), which must be redeemed within a month of activation. With eight climbing visits, you can mix up your climbing routine with bouldering days and top-roping days. It's a great exercise alternative to lifting refrigerators and running on top of treadmills greased with cottage cheese.

These instructors welcome climbers of all skill levels into the world of bouldering and top-rope climbing with classes that are accessible even for novices and open practice sessions held in an expansive indoor gym. Hundreds of routes pepper the gym's rock-feature walls, replete with multihued routes that delineate difficulty and viable holds and crimp boards that help to build finger strength without constantly challenging strangers to thumb wars.
