It might seem obvious that comfortable women’s underwear is an essential building block of your wardrobe. But it can be all too tempting to sacrifice fit for fashion, choosing panties that look great but ride up, peek over waistbands, or chafe delicate skin. This panty size chart helps you determine the right size (and style) for you.

How to Determine Your Panty Size

Step 1: Measuring your waist

Wrap a soft measuring tape snugly around your natural waist. For help finding this area, try bending sideways—the crease that forms should mark the spot. Make sure the measuring tape is parallel to the ground, and then take your measurement.

Step 2: Measuring your hips

Keeping the measuring tape parallel to the ground, wrap it around the fullest part of your hips, and then record your measurement.

With these two numbers in hand, find your ideal fit in the panty size chart below:

25"–26" 35"–36" 5 S
27"–28"  37"–38" 6
29"–30"  39"–40"  7
31"–32"  41"–42"  8 XL
33"–34"  43"–44"  9 XXL
35"–36"  45"–46"  10 XXXL
37"–38"  47"–48"  11
39"–40"  49"–50"  12
41"–42"  51"–52"  13
43"–44"  53"–54"  14
45"–46"  55"–56"  15

How Should Underwear Fit?

This area should lie flat and secure against the body. Fabric shouldn’t bunch or sag in the front or back, and it should feel snug but not constrictive. If there’s a seam, it should be visible from the front.

The waistband shouldn’t bunch, roll, or dig into your skin. It should stay in place without causing discomfort.

Check to make sure the leg openings are evenly arched and that they don’t hug too tightly or cause indentations.

Though the guidelines change based on style, underwear should generally cover the buttocks in an even, symmetrical way. If they ride up, try a larger panty size.
