More popularly—and less confusingly—known as the Big Island, Hawai'i is one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the world. The End of the World is a popular destination, where the lava rock rises up to 30 feet high, making for a thrilling—yet non-sanctioned—leap into the water . . . and a challenging climb up the cliff face back to the top.

When it comes to Hawaii, pictures of beaches are what people usually expect to see. But some of its most bewitching sites are inland, such as this waterfall on Maui's Road to Hana.

O'ahu

Known as The Gathering Place, O'ahu is the state of Hawaii's most popular and most populated island. Take a drive north away from Honolulu, and you'll find the secluded surf enclave of the North Shore, lush mountains, and some of the world's most stunning beaches, such as this one, on the island's Windward side.

Kaua'i

The Garden Isle is known for the Na Pali Coast—where visitors hike or kayak in a tropical wilderness, with no shortage of stunning vistas. Some also might argue that Kaua'i is the most romantic of all the islands, but that's a close call.

Moloka'i

Though it's dubbed The Friendly Isle, Moloka'i hosts only one hotel; visitors usually stay in rental homes and condos. Considered one of the state's more untamed locales, this island boasts great hiking trails as well as rustic spots to build your own temporary shelter.

Lana'i

Of all the publicly accessible Hawaiian islands, this is the smallest. Once a pineapple plantation, the island is known for its golf courses—and its simplicity. Lana'i City has no traffic lights, and most attractions outside of town are only accessible by off-road vehicles. At Manele Harbor, expect to snap classic Hawaii photos, such as this one of the ocean against the rising rock face.
