He leased a 500-square-foot space in Manhattan using $500 (raised by pawning his wife's engagement ring) and sold men’s suits and clothing procured from manufacturers’ closeouts, auctions, and bankruptcy sales. He also attracted customers by offering free alterations and parking. Later on, Barney’s son Fred helped to evolve and transform his father's business into the global phenomenon it is today.
