Threadless started under the name dreamless.org back in 2000, thanks to the efforts of founders Jake Nickell and Jacob DeHart. The duo had only $1,000 when they started the company as a forum that invited users to post designs—the best of which would be printed on T-shirts that you can now buy for less when you apply a Threadless discount code to your order. Nickell and DeHart soon expanded the idea, developing a voting system and bringing Threadless under the oversight of skinnyCorp, Nickell’s web agency.
Finding the time to grow his small business was tough, so Nickell dropped out of art school and quit his full-time job when he was still in his early 20s to focus on the endeavor. Threadless grew steadily over the six years after its inception, with revenue reaching $6.5 million by 2006. Harvard professor Karim Lakhani, in an Inc. article that named Threadless 'The Most Innovative Small Company in America', said that it "completely blurs that line of who is a producer and who is a consumer . . . The customers end up playing a critical role in idea generation, marketing, and sales forecasting," effectively putting the company’s future product lines directly in the customers’ control.
Threadless also treats its designers well by paying them for printed designs in cash and gift cards. And if a piece is reprinted, the artist receives an additional payment. To honor their creativity, Jake Nickell published a book called “Threadless: Ten Years of T-shirts from the World's Most Inspiring Online Design Community” to collect the designs and interview the artists who have made Threadless what it is.
What you wear says a lot about you, which is only a problem if you relieve the burden of keeping a secret by whispering it into your closet. Make a statement with a Threadless coupon from Groupon.
