New York City Michelin Stars for 2015

Michelin’s unveiling of its 10th-anniversary New York City Guide on September 30 was not without surprises. A beloved three-star restaurant took a hit, a certain non-Manhattan borough won big, and Gotham got its first two-star female chef. But what does it all mean? Here’s a breakdown of some of the major news from the Guide:

Daniel lost a star. In what might be the biggest upset of this edition of the Guide, Daniel Boulud’s flagship French restaurant was knocked down to two stars. “He hasn’t been consistently delivering food at the three-star level,” Michelin’s international director told Bloomberg. “We look forward to him winning it back soon.”
The rise of Brooklyn. Though it may be a while before it star count rivals Manhattan’s, the foodiest of the outer boroughs has definitely come into its own this year. East Williamsburg tasting-menu spot Blanca gained an extra star this year, while one-star newcomers like Delaware and Hudson, Pok Pok Ny, and Take Root also shone. Female chefs. Chef Emma Bengtsson of Aquavit is the first female chef in NYC to get two stars, and one of only three to hold the honor in the US. But it was a big year for women in general, with chefs like La Vara’s Alex Raij and Take Root’s Anna Hieronimus and Elise Kornack earning their first stars.
