Three Trips for Your Unused Vacation Time

BY: Rashawn Mitchner |Nov 3, 2015

Have you made it this far into the year without taking a vacation? A 2014 survey by the jobs website Glassdoor found that US workers took only about half of their allotted vacation time. Even worse: 15% of people didn’t take any time off from work at all. For your health and sanity, we recommend taking a break—and don’t just make it a staycation. Whether you have a lot of vacation time to burn through or just a few days, we have a trip for you.

Trip #1: Las Vegas | 3 Days of Vacation Time

Las Vegas Strip

A Las Vegas weekend trip gives you plenty of time to hit the highlights. The larger casino complexes—like Luxor, MGM Grand, and Caesars—have so much to do besides gamble that you could be entertained in any one of them from sunup to sundown. On day 1, play the slots and blow your winnings at designer boutiques. Test your limits on day 2 at all-you-can-eat buffets and recover with a hot-stone massage. We recommend a show on the night of day 3: Celine Dion’s a perennial favorite.

Where to stay: You have to sleep at some point. Rest up at the 4-star Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, located on the Strip.

Trip #2: Riviera Maya, Mexico | 5 Days of Vacation Time

Beach in Riviera Maya, Mexico

Set days 1 and 2 of your Riviera Maya vacation aside to simply hang out on the beach next to your hotel, swimming in the Caribbean Sea and working on your tan while you read that book you’ve been chipping away at for months. Days 3 and 4 can be used for exploring some of the Riviera Maya’s other natural wonders. We suggest swimming in Cenote Ik Kil, a deep, crystal-clear pool far beneath the earth. Then pencil in a day trip to see ancient Mayan ruins in Tulum or Coba on day 5.

Where to stay: The 4-star Senses Riviera Maya by Artisan has lots of luxe features, but it’s the suites’ ocean views that will grab your attention.

Trip #3: Dublin, London, and Paris | 9 Days of Vacation Time

Big Ben in London, UK

Luckily for you, hoarding all that vacation time means you can take a long international trip. Better yet: you’ll enjoy a more affordable European vacation with smaller crowds if you visit in the fall or winter off-season. Spend days 1–3 in Dublin, walking the halls of Dublin Castle and sipping stout in the Guinness Storehouse. Jet to London for days 4 and 5 to tour the city via double-decker bus and watch a play in the West End. Your trip ends in Paris, where you can spend days 6–9 admiring famous artwork in the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay and sampling decadent pastries in the city’s famous cafés. Before you leave, visit the Eiffel Tower at night to bask in its romantic lighting.

Where to stay: No hostels for you. This vacation includes accommodations at 3- and 4-star hotels in each city.
