Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza
It takes a pretty special event to convince a large crowd to gather on a frozen lake. That's where Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza comes in. Billed today as the world's largest ice fishing competition, the blowout has been steadily drawing larger crowds of spectators and contestants since its inception in 1990. The event raises a bunch of money—to the tune of about $150,000—for local charities while giving anglers a chance to show off their skills and win prizes. The prizes, 150 in all, include everything from a Ford or GMC truck to a Honda generator and an Ice Castle trophy. At the end of the day, the proceeds go to help worthy charities, such as Kids Against Hunger, Lakes Area Restorative Justice Project, and Confidence Learning Center, an outdoor learning center that teaches life skills to those with developmental disabilities.
