Scottsdale, Arizona: Stucco Mansions amid Rocky Desert Landscape

Scottsdale once served as ranch land where farmers grew oranges and lemons and cowboys kicked up dust in the fierce, dry heat of the Sonoran Desert. That era earned Scottsdale the nickname of “The West's Most Western Town.” Today, it is an affluent city landscaped with lush green grass and lined with stucco mansions. For a glimpse of the city's Old West roots, head to Old Town Scottsdale, where wooden boardwalks and hitching posts sit in front of a retro ice-cream parlor and rustic specialty shops.

Upon arriving in Scottsdale, you know you're in the desert—cacti and tumbleweeds dot the landscape, and dry shrubs and gnarled trees cover the McDowell Mountains in the distance. To get a closer look at Southwestern flora, head to the Desert Botanical Garden. There, themed trails wind past huge cacti and other moisture-hoarding succulents, best seen in the cooler early morning or twilight hours.

Just muh Great location and comfortable. However thin walls made noise bad. Also no maid service the after the first night. No coffee in the lobby and the front glass doors were dirty. Not up to Hilton standards.

Resort is in the name, it should just say Hotel. The word "resort" is in the name, however the place feels like a square shape hotel, surrounded by a parking lot. It is a solid "OK" but feels a little bit soul-less and missing anything that feels "resort". The exterior landscaping is similar to the landscaping on the local streets with lots of gravel. The resort part is a big pool in the middle and some palm trees and lots of cement. Staff was very nice but minimal. No valet, bellboy or concierge as far as I could see, just front desk and cleaning crew (also very friendly and polite), like any mid range hotel, you are on your own. The front desk efficiently moved my original room from parking lot level with the window facing the parked cars in the back of the hotel, to a 2nd story room that felt much more safe and secure. The 2nd floor, where I ended up, has much higher ceilings and feels much better. I didn't think security would be my first thought in Scottsdale. Everything was very clean. The wall to wall carpeting looked fine but I cringed a little walking on it with bare feet, most places have moved away from carpet for sanitary reasons (no slippers offered). The electric car charging option they have is not practical for a few reasons (time and money). I can see they have updated large parts of the public areas and the rooms. Looks good but again, it feels oddly soul-less. They need to introduce much more greenery I think, it just feels barren. The original hotel size bathrooms are surprisingly small. They should have replaced the original tiny tired toilets in the upgrade. The "resort's" exercise room was very small, maybe it was in a temporary spot? I have to admit I just finished a month long business trip in Asia staying at 5 star hotels so when I read "resort in Scottsdale" it set the bar high. What's the phrase? "Under promise and over deliver"? My first impression was disappointment (hence the room change). We had originally planned to stay 6 nights including 4 nights for the event we were attending because we had never spent anytime in Phoenix and were very much looking forward to "resort" relaxing and looking around Phoenix. After one day I lowered it to 5 nights, after 2 days I lowered it to 4 nights and we left, feeling defeated, as soon as the event ended at noon the last day. We used the extra time on our schedule to spend a night at a resort in Palm Springs as we drove home to Los Angeles.

Great conference location I was very impressed with the Customer Service at this Hilton. Specifically Lori Boyd she helped me at the front desk with printing several times throughout my conference. Overall, the food and hospitality at this location were excellent. I travel to many conferences and I felt this was a far above average. All the food was delicious and they catered to our healthy needs. The staff all seem to be in a good mood and I always take that as a good sign :-)
