Gaylord, Michigan: Alpine Village in the Snow Belt of the Northern Lower Peninsula

“Indoors” might as well be a four-letter word in Gaylord. There are so many outdoor activities in this northern Lower Michigan town that residents and visitors spend most of their time in the fresh air. Swimming in Otsego Lake, hiking, and golfing are popular during the warmer months, but winter is when Gaylord really thrives. The town is located in the region’s snow belt and gets more than 180 inches of snow each year. Hundreds of miles of cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails crisscross its wooded terrain. Head to Groen Nature Preserve for some of the most accessible trails—be sure to pick up trail maps at the Gaylord Area Convention & Tourism Bureau beforehand.

The town itself is reminiscent of an Alpine village. Gingerbread buildings housing specialty shops, boutiques, and restaurants line the walkable downtown. The chalet-style architecture dates back to the 1930s when community leaders adopted the theme throughout the town.

We had a wonderful time. The only complaint was the noise from rooms above us.

We loved our stay at the lodge. The rooms are huge and the beds very comfy. The outdoor hot tub and pool were wonderful after a day outside. Our only complaint was the noise from the floor above us. We could hear walking and running all night long. If you want to sleep —bring a fan!

Great family vacation. We spent three days skiing and ultimate tubing. Only complaint was teh actual hotel. There was something making a loud noise often, even through the night. We are guessing a ice machine, pop machine, or a door on the upper level.

The room was nice and just what you'd expect. Very standard. It was clean. The skiing was nice and the upgrade to a magic carpet will make taking the kids even better. The pool and hot tub were a little dated but functioned just fine. Over all a pleasant experience.
