Self-Guided Canoe Trip in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters

In the 18th century, French Canadian fur traders paddled bark canoes along the waterways between Minnesota and Ontario to barter with Native American tribes. These same water routes now make up the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, where the rivers still teem with smallmouth bass and neighboring pine forests shelter moose and white-tailed deer.

The team at Voyageur North Outfitters has been helping visitors plot trips into this wilderness for more than three decades. With this package, they’ll prepare you to explore the wilderness on your own during a 2- or 3-night excursion. The package includes:

  • Ultralight aluminum or ABS canoe
  • Paddles and carrying yoke
  • Complete camp and trail food with customizable menu options
  • Self-supporting Alps tent with sleeping bag and sleeping pad
  • Routing and trip-planning service
  • Free transportation to many entry points
  • Completely-equipped food pack

The food pack includes food staples (oil, salt, etc.), pots and pans, flatware, cups, plates, and aluminum foil, among other camping essentials. See the company website for a description of the Ultralight package.

Max group size for Forest Service is 9 people per permit.

Ely, Minnesota: Gateway to Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Superior National Forest

Located in the middle of Superior National Forest, the town of Ely was founded in the 19th century as a mining outpost near the Vermilion Iron Range. The mines have since closed, but the town retains its rugged spirit through its proximity to one of Northern Minnesota’s natural wonders: the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. This boater’s paradise is a prime spot for canoeing and fishing throughout the warmer months. Back in town, visitors can check in on Ely’s conservation efforts at the International Wolf Center and the North American Bear Center.

They packed candy. After a few days sugar was the greatest thing. They picked us up with cold drinks.
