Phill Fest & Terezinha Valois Band, February 10

Brazilian jazz runs deep in guitarist Phill Fest’s blood—he’s the son of Manfredo Fest, a pianist who led a long and respected career as a bossa-nova bandleader. Aided by the cool, jaunty vocals (and occasional percussion) of Terezinha Valois, his nimble fingers deliver renditions of such classics as “Dindi,” “A Felicidade,” and “So Danco Samba.”

The Resolvers, March 10

Big-band reggae act The Resolvers set the stage in motion with as many as 3 lead vocalists and 10 musicians. Vocalists Ojay and Sahara Smith are the offspring of legendary reggae baritone Ernie Smith, singer of “Ride on Sammy” and “Pitta Patta.” A full horn section lays down a sonic foundation as soft and warm as beach sand, over which the vocals skip and tease with more sass than might be expected for a famously laid-back genre. Although the musicians’ reverence for Bob Marley and Lee “Scratch” Perry is never in question, plenty of funk, soul, and New Orleans brass also finds its way into their sonic stew.

The David Mayfield Parade, April 21

David Mayfield was born into roots music. He spent much of his childhood living on a tour bus and roaming the country with his family’s bluegrass band before signing on as a sideman for Grand Ole Opry–caliber acts. But it wasn’t until The Avett Brothers noticed his talent for songwriting and pulling off a bolo tie that he fully stepped into the spotlight as a frontman. Amid the fiddle and standup bass of The David Mayfield Parade, the man in the bushy beard and country-gentleman suit strums guitar and sings in a voice that can’t help but inject a little modern irony into the high-lonesome tradition. Although the lyrics fit right into the well-crafted Nashville model, Mayfield and his band leaven the lovelorn earnestness with the occasional goofy dance or somersault onstage.
