Satchel Paige and the Kansas City Swing
It’s 1947. Change for black Americans seems close and Satchel Paige feels like he’s on top of the world. He’s a superstar pitcher in the Negro Leagues (the best in baseball, according to Joe DiMaggio), who’s so good at striking out batters that sometimes he has his outfielders sit down in the grass. But along comes Jackie Robinson. Suddenly Paige finds himself in Jackie’s shadow, and no matter how hard he tries to get out of it, all he finds are barriers: he’s over 40 already, and the MLB association is still resistant to integration. What follows is a jazz-filled drama that closely examines America on the brink of change.
