The Deal

Barnum

Phineas Taylor Barnum’s surname has long been synonymous with the spectacle of circus. But before the Barnum & Bailey Circus became a legendary household name and major destination for children with mean parents, he was just an eccentric with a dream. Barnum tracks his rise to the throne as the “Prince of Humbug” as he gathers a boisterous troupe of acrobats, elephants, and “mermaids” to dazzle and perplex crowds across the country. Audiences at the Old Creamery Theatre in the Amana Colonies also meet a host of his most legendary performers, including Swedish Nightingale Jenny Lind, the 3-foot-tall actor known as General Tom Thumb, and Joice Heth, an 80-year-old woman billed as the 161-year-old onetime nanny to George Washington. As the New York Times wrote upon its 1980 Broadway premier, Cy Coleman’s score “simply bursts with melodies—ballads, marches, ragtime strut numbers, burlesque turns,” making for “an evening of pure, exhilarating fun.”
