What You’ll Do
Most books come to life in your imagination, their words projecting dynamic characters, kingdoms, and adventures on the mind’s eye. Pop-up books, on the other hand, prefer to jump off the page. Artist Carol Owen leads you through the process of creating ornate-looking (but simple to make) pages all your own, guiding you step by step through the process of crafting several pop-ups.
Peer into the Life of an Artist
Classes begin with a tour of the studio, where Carol paints, collages, and creates various paper artworks. Afterward, live demos give you the chance to witness Carol’s artistic process firsthand.
Make Your Own Pop-Up Art
You’ll create several pop-up pages under Carol’s watchful eye.
Simple and Not-So-Simple
The constructed designs are simple enough for a beginner, but look both beautiful and complex.
Mixed Media Artist
The core of Carol Owen’s art is her family. Her Spirit Houses, which have been featured in multiple publications—including her own book, Crafting Personal Shrines—began as a way to explore her family history using photos and mementos to create affecting three-dimensional tributes. Now Owens works with found objects, creates Spirit Houses for other families, and teaches aspiring artists how to make her houses, altered books, and other dynamic, soulful works of art.
