The Scouting Report
Prior to February 20, FC Tacoma 253 had never stepped onto the pitch as a team. Now, they’re one win away from advancing to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, a prestigious, nationwide tournament that pits professional soccer clubs against the country’s most talented amateur squads. During that match on February 20, FCT defeated the heavily-favored Portland Spartans, 2-1. It was the first win in club history, but more importantly, it secured a spot in the final U.S. Open qualifying round.
This Sunday, FC Tacoma will attempt to make history by becoming the city’s first team to advance to the US Open Cup in the modern professional era. Behind Gareth Vaughn, Bradley Jacobson, and a roster of local standouts, they’ll clash with the San Diego Flash, who defeated Deportivo Coras USA to reach this point. The highly anticipated match will take place at historic Memorial Stadium, which has the space and team spirit necessary to accommodate the large crowd expected to be on hand.
