From an initial crop of 150 auditioning singers and the final round’s 10 competitors, one Pittsburgh-area college student will take the title and the $5,000 prize as the Campus Superstar on April 1. The diverse finalists arrive on stage from upbringings in Maine and Colorado as well as closer to home, all ready to belt their best before a live band and the glamorous trappings of a Broadway revue or an American Idol–style TV spectacular.
Now in its sixth year, the contest raises funds for the youth-focused programming of the Hillel Jewish University Center while drawing young artists closer to their community and away from vicious back-alley barbershop quartets. Their pure tones—ornamenting songs drawn from both theater and pop traditions—soar and swoop from the center of Carnegie Music Hall’s semicircular Gilded Age stage, whose massive golden archway sets the crimson velvet seats aglow.
