Hockey, The Musical!
When the Lord Above decides there is one too many sports in the world, He decides there is only one clear for smiting: hockey. But that doesn’t sit too well with fans of the underdog game. So the game gets one more chance—if five pure-of-heart hockey fans can plead their case, God will reconsider. Their appeals frequently take the form of song in both original and parody tunes including “When You’re A Wing,” “Kill Baseball,” and “God is a Canuck,” which may backfire if God isn’t a fan of poutine.
In the words of creator Mitch Albom, it’s “Spamalot - with hockey sticks.” The Michigan native, longtime sports writer for Detroit Free Press, and author of Tuesdays with Morrie isn’t completely new to playwriting and songwriting—after all, he penned sports play Ernie and the Warren Zevon song “Hit Somebody.” But Hockey, The Musical! marks the first time he’s blended the two. In an interview with Encore Michigan, he delves into why—after a year marked by the loss of his mother and numerous, very somber creative projects, he felt the need to pen something lighter. A Detroiter to his core, he was naturally drawn to hockey. “It’s an underdog sport in an underdog town,” he muses. “I think that’s why we gravitate toward hockey in Detroit.”
