Se Llama Cristina

Surrounded by empty bottles, empty needles, and other detritus of a night of unhappy debauchery, a Man and a Woman awake with no recollection of who they are. But this isn’t a morality tale of sober living—it’s something much stranger. As they piece together the poor decisions that led them to this moment, the nameless duo must also contend with such surreal factors as a musical telephone repairman and a swaddled chicken drumstick in the baby’s crib. Written by acclaimed Mexican-American playwright Octavio Solis as he came to terms with his own fatherhood, Se Llama Cristina explores the uncertainty of parenthood in poetic allegory and unforgettable imagery.

This Off-Broadway production is set in a Dali-esque room of skewed doors and windows and furniture that sinks into the floor. The uneasy set was designed by Raul Abrego, whose work has also been featured at the Juilliard Opera Center, New World Stages, and in the 2009 film Cruzando. Gerardo Rodriguez, seen in that same movie, plays the Man with the sadness of addiction, while newcomer Carmen Zilles “steals the show” as the Woman, according to The Broadway Blog. The New York Times calls it a “magical realist fable with a side of fried chicken,” and in their Best Bet review, Theatre Is Easy praised the show as a combination of Memento, Mulholland Drive, and The Matrix, calling it “a well-acted, fantastic, and entertaining play about a romp into the unknown, the undefinable, but ultimately not regrettable.”
