American Buffalo

Three men sit in a cluttered junk shop, their profanity-laced tirades overlapping like a poet’s transcription of a street brawl. Don, the shop’s owner, has just sold a rare buffalo nickel to a collector, realizing too late that it was worth far more than he asked. He hatches a plan with his assistant, Bobby, to steal the coin back, a plan that his friend, Teach, twists into a harebrained scheme to steal the entire collection and finally get the American Journal of Numismatics to print his letters. Tempers flare, invectives fly, and the proposed crime sits neglected amidst their combat.

One of the breakout works of acid-tongued mastermind David Mamet, American Buffalo was his first play to earn a Broadway production. Considered an enjoyable but plotless trifle when it premiered, its reputation has steadily built since then, meriting several remounts and a movie with Dennis Franz and Dustin Hoffman. The show’s frequent restaging has lead the New York Times’ Benedict Nightingale to observe that “on each of the dozen or so occasions I’ve encountered it on page or stage it has revealed more of itself…And that, for me, is a powerful symptom of a theatrical masterpiece.”

Kansas City Repertory Theatre

For much of its 49-year history, the Kansas City Repertory Theatre was synonymous with Dr. Patricia McIlrath. Hired to run UMKC’s University Playhouse and chair the department of speech—which encompassed television and radio as well as theatrical productions—McIlrath quickly moved to connect the school with professional theater. She strove to achieve an “organic relationship between academic and professional theater,” eventually mingling commercial entertainment with experimentation. Today, under the auspices of nationally known director and playwright Eric Rosen, the Rep continues to bring eye-catching and thought-provoking theater to Kansas City’s stages, from big musicals such as Into the Woods to lesser known works like Two Gentlemen of Vermont.
