red, black & GREEN: a blues (rbGb)

Trailer for red, black & GREEN: a blues (rbGb)

Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s red, black & GREEN: a blues (rbGb) isn’t a dance recital, play, or performance-art piece—it’s a little of all three. Audiences are immersed in the experience as they navigate an interactive set occupied by four performers. The cast members serve as poets, musicians, and dancers as they address the black experience and green living in four suggested spaces and seasons: a Chicago summer, a Houston autumn, a Harlem winter, and an Oakland spring. In each locale, art and action demonstrates what it means to take part in today’s interdependent society, and casts an eye to the future by addressing environmentalism and sustainability.

The unconventional event is the brainchild of Marc Bamuthi Joseph, a dynamic voice in the performing arts scene. Named one of America’s Top Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences by Smithsonian Magazine, Joseph was also the first recipient of the United States Artists Rockefeller Fellowship and served as artistic director of HBO’s Russell Simmons presents Brave New Voices. Joseph is known for his poetic original works, which have been staged all over the world. He reunites with former collaborators in his latest piece, drawing on the talents of choreographer Stacey Printz and composer Tommy Shepherd, along with set designer Theaster Gates, to create an evocative theater experience.
