Masked Marvels and Wondertales
Michael Cooper not only trained under Parisian mime legend Étienne Decroux, the same teacher who turned Marcel Marceau into a legend, but Tony Montanaro, a student of Marcel Marceau and one of the greats himself. Although Cooper carries on the traditions of the most famous names in pantomime, he often breaks its biggest rule: he doesn’t stay mum. Instead, he melds physical and verbal storytelling into a bewildering one-man show that has delighted all ages for more than three decades.
As the son of a traveling horse doctor, Cooper has noted the mannerisms and hair trends of the animal kingdom, and used those for his act. In elaborate handmade masks, most of which take up to three-hundred hours to craft, he makes it look natural for a man to turn into a horse, a chicken, a dog, a bubble-blowing fish, or a bull that seemingly stepped out of Guernica. Unleashing his infectious imagination, The Masked Marvel narrates a fantastical journey to lands where giant noses run amok, fish comically fish for children, and man-sized babies take their first steps. The show also features the balletic poetry and vaudevillian chicanery of Cooper’s stilt work.
