2015–16 Season Highlights

  • Inside the Classics: Hipster vs. Nerd (Friday, February 12, at 8 p.m.)—The hipster? Mozart, a brash, young, irreverent genius. The nerd? Haydn, a man who approached the orchestra as though it were a finely tuned machine. The goal? To explore the works of these two personalities and highlight their importance to classical music. Following excerpts and conversations, prepare for a full performance of the hipster’s Haffner symphony and the nerd’s The Clock.
  • Inside the Classics: And Bach Begat (Friday, March 11, 8 p.m.)-He had 21 children of his own, but J.S. Bach’s musical offspring are innumerable, the last 250 years’ worth of composers who have looked to him as Papa. In German, the name Bach meansbrook, and of all the big-name composers who’ve drunk from his amazing stream, no one did so more deeply or powerfully than Beethoven. Inspired by Bach’s mastery of the great musical form of his time, the fugue, Beethoven, a hundred years late, created an awe-inspiring fugue of his own.
  • Symphony in 60: Stravinsky’s Petrushka (Thursday, April 14, 8 p.m.)—Explore the depths and subtleties of two orchestra works in just 60 minutes, including Bach’s third Brandenburg concerto and Stravinsky’s colorful Petrushka ballet score.
  • Inside the Classics: The Evolution of Opera (Friday, May 20, 8 p.m.)—The orchestra and a handful of singers dissect the opera and all its moving parts, from its beginnings as entertainment for royalty to its current state as artistic fare for everyone. Throughout this dramatic history course, expect an examination of arias, overtures, and vocal chords.
  • Symphony in 60: Erin Keefe Plays Brahms (Thursday, May 26, 8 p.m.)–Johannes Brahms created one of the most beloved works for the “soprano” of the strings in his Violin Concerto, performed in these concerts by the Orchestra’s concertmaster, Erin Keefe.
  • Symphony in 60: Brahms’ Double Concerto (Thursday, July 14, 8 p.m.)– This is a gorgeous classic: Brahms’ Double Concerto, in which you get the pleasure of hearing not one, but two amazing soloists, their violin and cello singing beautiful lines out in front of the Orchestra.
