The Scouting Report
Hired in March of 2014, men’s basketball coach Mike Rhoades is expected to guide the Owls into a new era. Prior to arriving at Rice, Rhoades was one of the engineers behind Virginia Commonwealth’s streak of NCAA Tournament appearances. Of course, the coach doesn’t shoot the ball or compose new verses in the school song—that’s up to the players. Senior Seth Gearhart headlines the 2014-15 Owls roster as the returning leader in blocks and rebounds. The 6’7” forward is potent from beyond the arc, too, and he proved that with a trio of three-pointers in the Owls’ season opener. Fans can catch the talented forward and new coach in action during several upcoming match-ups, including the Conference USA opener against UTSA on January 2.
Though it’s smaller than many other schools competing in Division I, Rice has established itself as a force across most of its athletic programs. That’s especially true of the baseball team, which won the College World Series in 2003 and hasn’t posted a record below the .500 mark since 1991. In 2013, the football program won its first outright conference championship since 1957, and on the women’s side, the volleyball, soccer, and basketball teams are annual contenders. Through all their sports, the MOB—Marching Owl Band—lays the soundtrack for success. The band has become renowned for its inventive and often humorous formations, unlike traditional bands, which are just manipulated by strings tied to the conductor’s fingers.
