In what The L Magazine calls “a killer dark comedy,”Hellcab starts the meter for an intense and poignant trip through a cab driver’s seemingly endless Christmas Eve shift. Lifted from the real-life experiences of playwright and former Chicago cabby Will Kern, the show sees a string of passengers enter and exit the car, with most of them making a strong case against humanity the moment they open their mouth. The driver is forced to interact with a smarmy lawyer, a libidinous couple, a trio of drug addicts, and other miscreants that could leave him permanently jaded. Yet somehow the bitter cold evening and its polarizing passengers leave the cabby existentially transformed, and possibly even enlightened.<p>
Rising Sun Performance Company
Where some theater outfits have a mission, Rising Sun Performance Company has a manifesto. Amongst the many values it champions, the group declares the power of fostering talent, lauds a take-no-prisoners attitude, and reminds members that “no one is too good to sweep and mop the stage.” That tongue-in-cheek touch perfectly captures the spirit of the Off-Off Broadway ensemble, which has received accolades for its youthful enthusiasm and camaraderie. Now celebrating “12 years of effervescence,” the company’s adherence to the ideals of ensemble theater, and smart selections of daring dramas and offbeat comedies, have made them the buttered toast of critics and audiences alike.
