Señorita y Madame: The Secret War of Elizabeth Arden & Helena Rubinstein
One would think Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein would be allies. Over a hundred years ago, both women immigrated to America with next to nothing. And then they became household names after building health and beauty empires that revolutionized the entire cosmetics industry. Yet all the riches and makeup in the world couldn’t veil the animosity between the two icons, which is explored in comic detail in Venezuelan playwright Gustavo Ott’s Señorita y Madame: The Secret War of Elizabeth Arden & Helena Rubinstein. Making it’s U.S. debut, the play portrays the decades-long feud through bold performances and plentiful biting humor, best evidenced by Arden’s classic quip: “Contempt, my dear, is a terrible feeling…Except when it’s mutual.”
