Future opera singers are easily identified at birth due to their multi-octave crying and graceful bows as they emerge from the womb. Check out how far these tiny miracles have come with today’s GrouponLive deal: for $12, you get one ticket to see La Tragedie de Carmen, presented by Shreveport Opera at Riverview Theater on Saturday, February 4, at 7:30 p.m. (up to a $25 value). Groupon buyers will be seated in the sections highlighted in orange.
Now in its 63rd season, Shreveport Opera delights theatergoers with classic operas rendered in sumptuous visual and euphonic hues. In this adaptation of the 1875 masterpiece centered on free-spirited Gypsy woman Carmen, British playwright Peter Brook whittles Bizet's four acts into a lean, modern 90-minute production. The original music, led by conductor Kostis Protopapas, and new dialogue escort audience members to the sultry streets of Seville, where Carmen seduces a young corporal named Don José with a flower, a song, and a text message with a winking kitty-face emoticon. Considerable drama soon consumes Don José's courtship of the titular character. Several love triangles frame the pair, as an old sweetheart pursues Don José and Carmen contends with advances from a military officer, a professional boxer, and her missing-in-action husband. Jealousy, desire, and temporary heart-shaped tattoos come to a head onstage when chairs splinter in a barroom brawl and, ultimately, lives are lost in a deadly scuffle at a gypsy camp.
Though Shreveport Opera offers discounts for student tickets, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.
