Songs for a New World
A separated couple tentatively rediscovers the love that brought them together; a passionate young man dreams of being a basketball star to escape the ghetto; a despairing wife threatens to jump from her New York penthouse. Although these characters never meet, their stories and many others make up Songs for a New World. Jettisoning traditional dramatic structure, show creators Jason Robert Brown and Daisy Prince settled on a collection of songs intended to evoke a feeling rather than build a plot. Dealing broadly with moments of transition—when one decision cleaves the future from the past—the musical numbers playfully romp from gospel to pop and back. Much like the Wicked Witch singing "Dancing in the Rain," each character dissolves at the end of his or her song, but the talented foursome that makes up the cast follows emotional arcs throughout that bind each piece to the rest.
Imaginary Theatre Company
"Actors love to act." This simple fact is what defines Imaginary Theatre Company, a collective dedicated to giving its members opportunities to perform in front of audiences not made up of stuffed animals. In addition to producing rare and original plays, the company provides support for a different local non-profit organization with each production.
