The Complete Frida Kahlo
The tropical animals and foliage, vividly rendered. The imagery of blood and organs, held just this side of the grotesque by stylization. And, of course, that face: the brows knitted together, the hint of a mustache, and, above all, the appraising, seen-it-all stare. Frida Kahlo returned to these themes again and again in her 123 known paintings, making her one of the world's most instantly recognizable artists. With The Complete Frida Kahlo, fans can closely trace the development of her skills and obsessions through replicas of each of those paintings, hand-painted by master artists and assembled in North America for the first time.
Familiar masterpieces hang alongside pieces from her early years that have never been seen by members of the public who lacked the patience to stand and wait for a curtain to be opened in the houses where they hung. The exhibit delves further into Kahlo's remarkable life with photographs and hundreds of handmade recreations of her own possessions such as jewelry, dresses, and pre-Columbian artifacts that inspired her work. To-scale replicas of her studio and bedroom complete the experience, allowing visitors to commune the with painter in the spaces where she dreamed and worked.
